Anthropic Poised to Become One of the World’s Most Valuable Start-Ups

Artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic is expected to raise up to $5 billion in a new round that would value the company at $170 billion, Bloomberg reported on July 29. The investment is being led by San Francisco-based Iconiq Capital.

The new valuation represents a nearly threefold jump in four months, elevating Anthropic to the ranks of the world’s most valuable private technology firms. These include OpenAI, valued at $300 billion, ByteDance at $312 billion, and SpaceX at $400 billion.

According to sources, the raise will fall between $3 billion and $5 billion, with Iconiq considering a $1 billion injection. The move comes shortly after reports suggested Anthropic had been in discussions with Middle Eastern investors, including the UAE’s MGX fund.

Iconiq Capital, which manages more than $80 billion, is a notable investor in companies such as Airbnb, GoFundMe, Databricks, Monzo, Uber, and Zoom.

Anthropic’s last funding round in March brought in $3.5 billion, setting its valuation at $61.5 billion. The company has also received significant backing from Google, which invested over $1 billion, and Amazon, which has invested $8 billion.

The company expanded into Europe last year with the opening of an office in Dublin. In May, it launched its Claude 4 line of AI models, promoting Claude Opus 4 as the leading coding model globally.
