Apple appeals EU’s €500M fine over App Store payment restraints

Apple is appealing a €500 million penalty from the European Commission, challenging claims that its App Store policies violate the EU’s Digital Markets Act. The fine, issued in April, focused on Apple’s rules that limited developers’ ability to direct users to non-App Store payment methods.
The DMA requires large platforms to enable third-party payment systems. EU officials said Apple’s approach maintained excessive control over transactions.
In response, Apple updated its EU payment structure in June, adding several new fees for alternative payment processing. Regulators, however, signaled concerns about the complexity and fairness of these changes.
Apple said the Commission’s order oversteps legal boundaries and could negatively impact both software makers and consumers.
