CISOs Warn Unchecked AI Could Trigger UK Cyber Crisis

UK cybersecurity chiefs are warning of major risks tied to Chinese AI company DeepSeek, with 81% of CISOs demanding urgent government regulation. The findings come from an Absolute Security survey of 250 CISOs, raising fears of a national cyber crisis if AI is left unchecked.

The study revealed that 34% of CISOs have banned AI tools completely, while 30% have stopped certain deployments due to safety issues. DeepSeek’s potential to leak sensitive data and accelerate attacks is a top concern. Sixty percent predict higher attack volumes, while 42% now view AI as a threat rather than an asset.

Andy Ward of Absolute Security warned that technologies like DeepSeek are outpacing defences, leaving organisations vulnerable. Almost half of CISOs admitted their teams are unprepared for AI-driven threats. Without national regulation, businesses fear significant disruption to the economy.

Despite the risks, firms are not abandoning AI. Instead, 84% are hiring AI experts and 80% are training executives to build resilience while limiting risky deployments.

The takeaway from security leaders: AI must be embraced safely, not banned. They urge swift government action, rules, and a coordinated strategy to ensure AI strengthens rather than undermines national security.
